Not dual classing
In my opnion i dont think you have to take a second class. I was thinking of doing a pure elemantalist to i could focus on poitns in energy and two magics such as water to slow them down and earth to ignore armor levels. Do you agree or should you always take a second profession?

in pve you have to have one because the game doesnt allow otherwise
but most of the builds that are any good use at least one skill from a secondary profession. your elementalist could benefit from a monk secondary in pve (hard res) or a mesmer secondary in pvp (mantra of resolve).

I'm of the opinion that secondaries can be useful, but are far from necessary. My only character that has relied on a secondary is my warrior. My mesmer rocks most of the time (except when doing 55 in UW) without a secondary, my ranger has almost never used a secondary, and my ele wouldn't touch one (even for numerous farming builds for griffs, etc.). 3 of these have beaten the game, and the other is at RoF. So my piont is simply: don't feel like you're obligated to use one - the classes can be pretty self sufficient. At the same time, though, don't run away from one. There can be some very effective combos out there. Good luck, and enjoy!

PvP -
You don't HAVE to have a secondary...
PvE -
You HAVE to have one, but you don't HAVE to use it.

You can pretty much get by without using any secondaries, but when you get to stuff like farming, soloing UW, etc etc, its very hard to do things without comboing skills from different classes.

Even if you don't put any attribute points in your secondary class there are always secondary class skills that don't have an attribute; examples purge conditions, remove hex, plague touch, antidote signet, all elementalist glyphs, arcane echo/echo, grenths balance - too many to name really.

My conclusion from going ingame was that you couldn't complete the quest "A Secondary Profession" if you didn't get one in Pre-Searing, and if you didn't finish that quest you couldn't go into the Academy.

Geeze people. If you aren't going to get a secondary pick Monk. Just so you can be useful and use ressurect instead of resurrection signet.
